Topic (1) MITOEAGLE flyer

The production of a flyer/folder and poster for dissemination purposes of our MITOEAGLE project is included in Grant Period 1 with 2,700.- EUR.

The Core Group discussed a specific offer of Impact Ltd to produce a 4-page flyer/leaflet, to be completed by March 2017 within the limits of our budget (without poster). Details and comments from the Core Group (and from another COST Action) to this offer are summarized here:

Topic (2) Training School in Obergurgl, Tyrol/Austria in July 2017

In cooperation with the Mitochondrial Physiology Society a Training School will be organised in Obergurgl in 2017 July 23–30. A reservation had to be made in advance. The Medical University Innsbruck will provide some financial support. Training Schools are an essential COST networking tool. The MiPschool falls into Grant Period 2, and the MC Meeting in Barcelona is too late for taking a decision: In this advance e-VOTE we ask you about your opinion to organize the 2017 July 23–30 event as MiPschool 2017 – MITOEAGLE Science Camp. The structure is proposed as follows, with 70-120 participants at day 1-5, and 40-60 at day 5-8:

• Day 1. Arrival training school
• Day 2-4. Training school MiPsociety and MITOEAGLE: Day 2-3: Intoductory lectures on the mitochondrial electron transfer system (ETS), coupling of electron transfer to proton translocation and phosphorylation (OXPHOS), mitochondrial pathways, respiratory protocols for diagnosis of mitochondrial function, mitochondrial respiratory control in health and disease. Day 4: Scientific lectures and student presentations.
• Day 5. Departure school, arrival MITOEAGLE workshop, relaxing day for overall-participants
• Day 6-7. MITOEAGLE Workshop: WG1-4.
• Day 8. Departure MITOEAGLE

Adjustment of the flat rate The Work & Budget Plan for Grant Period 1 (2016-11-01 to 2017-04-30) has now been approved by our Management Committee. For the final calculation, the flat rate for accommodation was revised to an amount of EUR 95.00 per night for the November meeting in Verona (“A roadmap for MITOEAGLE and first steps”). Approval by the Management Committee is now required for this revised flat rate.

Topic (2) Implementation of specific plans to increase the involvement of Early Career Investigators and for maintaining and monitoring gender balance

Comment of the Scientific Committee (MITOEAGLE COST-Evaluation 2016-02-12): „The proposed Action must develop and implement specific plans to increase the involvement of Early Career Investigators and for maintaining and monitoring gender balance.“

We suggest to implement the following strategies as part of the specific plans to increase the involvement of Early Career Investigators and for maintaining and monitoring gender balance:

(a) Encourage the COST National Coordinators of any new party (COST country) joining during the Action to consider Early Career Investigators and gender balance in their nominations as new Management Committee Members.

(b) Encourage the COST National Coordinators of COST countries represented in the Action to support initiatives of established MC members to rotate in exchange of Early Career Investigators and to consider gender balance in replacement nominations.

Core Group

The Core Group is typically composed of the Action Chair, Vice Chair, Grant Holder Scientific Representative, WG Leaders, STSM and TS coordinators and any other horizontal role (i.e. about 10-12 persons). The CG meets to take decisions on behalf of the MC (if the CG has the formal mandate to do so by the MC), and otherwise to steer the Action and submits a list of decisions for the MC to approve. It is not compulsory to have a CG, especially in smaller Actions.

A CG meeting is therefore useful during a GP in addition to the compulsory MC, to (re)define the Action’s activities, in particular when there is budget under- or over-spending. - Dr. Federica Ortelli (COST Science Officer) (2016)
