Storage time without loss of function is tissue and species dependent and should be evaluated.

Take a larger biopsy and measure subsamples of the biopsy in a time course, e.g. all 2-4 hours, store part of it overnight. Repeat this experiment with a few biopsies.

Biopsies should be put immediately after taking on 4Β°C in a pre-cooled storage medium, e.g. BIOPS.

Up to 12 hours of storage does normally not affect mitochondrial respiratory function of liver and muscle biopsies of mammals.

Muscle biopsies of horses can be stored for 7 days without loss of function, but this might be an exception (see MiPNet12.23 FibreRespiration).
