Abstract: Morphologically homogeneous mitochondria ("large granules") separated from rat liver dispersions by the hypertonic sucrose method of Hogeboom, Schneider, and Pallade contain essentially all the measurable activity of the liver in the oxidation of fatty acids. Likewise, the integrated reactions of the Krebs tricarboxylic acid cycle are found in this fraction. Esterification of inorganic phosphate accompanies these oxidations in purified preparations of mitochondria. These bodies have insignificant glycolytic activity. "Mitochondria" prepared by other methods involving saline or water as the dispersing media are inactive in these reactions, possibly because of osmotic damage. β€’ Keywords: O2k-Publications:_Topics#Preparations
